I was looking for something heavy, stable, 22 inches tall, and with round posts to minimize what little diffraction a stand will cause. Oh, and I wanted that as cheap as possible. These fit the bill perfectly. They're steel and heavy, have a wide base (the largest I found) and a large enough speaker plate for my monitors. I don't know how these could be filled with shot, and I bet sand would leak out.
