I thought the stands were a bit expensive, but liked their looks when comparing them to other stands. I made a good choice. They are rock solid, look good and are ingeniously designed. The height adjustment is accomplished using plastic spacers that are completely hidden by the plastic collar at the top and the extension tube on the base. I was able to set the speakers to the height I wanted. The stands can be filled with sand but I didn't bother with that step because the stands are heavy and I don't feel they need any additional damping unless considerably larger speakers are used. They are perfect for the Klipsch B2 speakers.
