The top is veneer, but has a solid wood molding running around the perimeter. The feet are solid as well. The back panel has several openings in the appropriate locations to route cables through. The back panel is made from a dense cardboard, but I couldn't tell this was the case until I needed to cut one of the openings a little wider to accommodate an unusually deep stereo component. That turned out to be convenient as it can be cut with a box cutter if needed.The black paint finish has a satin sheen and the wood grain if visible through it- quite nice for a mass-produced piece. Brushed nickel doorknob hardware finish is also attractive. This item is extremely well packaged for shipping and arrived in perfect condition about 1-1/2 weeks after ordering. It is not quite fully assembled however - the feet and door hardware must be attached. That took only about 15 min. including placing the shelves at the desired height. Dimensions of the two component compartments are approx 18-1/4" W x 17-3/4" H x 18" D (without the 3/4" thick shelves). The center compartment is about 8-3/4" wide. The door latches protrude slightly into this space which prevented my stereo amplifier from sliding in. I removed the latch (2 screws), inserted the component and then replaced the latch - problem solved.The console gets all the components out of view, but they're easily accessible.
